Amaran Gems (Pvt) Ltd was founded in 1991 as a lapidary, offering their skilled value adding gem cutting service for faceting any type of rough gemstones varying from precious Montana Sapphires to Semi – precious stones including brittle stones such as kunzite sent by the dealers all around the world.
Later Amaran Gems (Pvt) Ltd. diversified into different fields such as heat treatment of Sapphires and sale of fine quality calibrated and free size Sri Lankan Sapphires and semi – precious gemstones. Further, Amaran gems tapped into local as well as foreign markets by introducing designing and manufacturing of jewellery. Amaran Gems (Pvt) Ltd. has also focused their research on heat treatment on sapphires using not only gas fired furnaces but also different electrical furnaces. Amaran Gems also conducted research on diffusion treatments on sapphires.
In recent Amaran Gems (Pvt) Ltd. proudly introduces a new gem testing laboratory in Colombo, Sri Lanka. As Amaran Gemlab is a private independent gem testing laboratory offers comprehensive gemstone identification and testing services. Amaran Gemlab team consists of highly qualified and well experienced gemmologists. Each team member has vast knowledge of identification of rough or cut and polished gemstones with the ability of identification of enhancements of gemstones and the operation of analytical instruments. Amaran Gemlab is equipped with advanced gem testing instruments such as UV-Vis Spectrophotometer, Raman spectrometer, and FTIR spectrometer etc. in addition to the basic gem testing instruments such as Refractometer, Polariscope, Gemological Microscope, Spectroscope, Dichroscope, 10X Loupe, UV-Lamp, Diamond tester, Chelsea color filter and Fiber Optic lamp etc.
Amaran gem lab’s dedication is an important foundation to its expertise and reliability in gemstone testing and certification. Amaran has contributed to a number of important developments in Gem trading since 1991. Its intention is to be one of the leading Gemmological laboratories in the world.
Chairman’s Profile
Hailing from a well-known business family in Sri Lanka, Mr. Amitha Gamage was born in Nugegoda. His father, the late Mr. David Urala Gamage was a well-respected businessman who operated several successful business establishments in Colombo.
Mr Amitha Gamage held the position of Chairman of the Sri Lanka National Gem and Jewellery Authority from 2013 to 2015 and he holds an MBA from the University of Western Sydney, Australia. Further, he has successfully completed coursework and finalizing the research dissertation for Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) from University of AIT in Bangkok.
He started his professional career at KPMG and Meralis Charted Accountants in UK before venturing out in to a career in Gem and Jewellery by establishing his own business Amaran Gems (Pvt) Ltd in 1991. This experience aided him in specializing in providing high quality gems and designer jewellery to clients from all across the world.
Mr Amitha Gamage was awarded the best gem cutter award and he is part qualified fellow of the Gemological Association of Great Britain (FGA) while he also holds a Diploma in Lapidary from Sri Lanka Gem Corporation in 1989. His never ending passion has led him to exhibit at the international gem and jewellery exhibitions such as Tucson gem exhibition (USA), JCK Las Vegas gem and jewellery exhibition (USA), JA gem and jewellery exhibition in New York (USA), London Jewellery exhibition (UK), Hong Kong jewellery exhibition (China), Bangkok jewellery exhibition (Thailand) and IJT jewellery exhibition in Tokyo (Japan) continuously for 6 years, from 1993 to 1999 and many more exhibitions all around the world. Mr. Gamage is a Member of International Colored Gem Stone Association (ICA), which is the world governing body for colored gem stone industry and Sri Lanka Gem & Jewellery Traders Association.
He has undergone courses in jewellery designing by Mr. Rex Billingham, renowned British jewellery instructor, manufacturing of jewellery and heat-treatment of gemstones. He has obtained the title of competent communicator (CC) from International Toastmasters USA.
From humble beginnings, Amaran Gems (Pvt) Limited has grown to be one of Sri Lanka’s best and most reputed Gem and jewellery manufacture and provider in the industry today. His knowledge and experience has helped to make Amaran a successful company in supplying calibrated and free size fine quality Sri Lankan Blue sapphires and many other colored gem stones to the global market. Yasasi Devmini Perera (B.Sc., FGA)
Yasasi graduated from University of London with a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting and Finance and is currently pursuing a professional qualification by Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA UK)
She obtained her FGA from the Gemmological Association of Great Britain in 2016 and has been in the Gem industry since then.Yasasi is thrilled to be working with Amaran Gemlab as a consultant Gemologist and assist with gem testing.
